Hi there! Welcome to the Feature Friday page: a platform for people in the community to share their personal experiences and thoughts on topics. The purpose of this movement is to encourage people to step outside your comfort zone. If you are interested, please fill out this form!
How it all began: I started a websiteThePhDream.com to capture moments in my PhD program to help others understand what I do and to provide guidance to those looking to embark on this career path. I realized that a lot of my research involves experiences of South Asians, Muslims, and/or women, but there isn’t a safe space to speak about these issues openly in some communities. In an effort to make my research have a positive impact in these communities, I decided to expand the focus of this website to become a place where other people can contribute their experiences and opinions about a variety of social issues.
Sometimes the topics on my site will be fun and creative (like sharing recipes or beauty tips). Other times, the topics will be serious (like sexual assault, mental health, racism) and require people to feel uncomfortable in order to have much needed conversations. This is the first step in working together as a community to raise awareness about important issues and work towards change. All in all, my intention is to provide a platform for people to come share their stories and I hope you will be a part of this project!
This is a work in progress, and I am open to suggestions and feedback but I don’t want to delay launching this any further; as a very wise woman told me (my mom… lol), “You can wait forever to make this perfect, but then you’ll be waiting to make a difference; start now and in time you will grow and this project will grow with the support of your friends, family, and community.”
Make sure to follow my page The PhDream for updates and if you want to contribute to the conversations or start a conversation fill out this form! I’m really looking forward to hearing from the rest of you and working as a part of Brown In Detroit to step outside of our comfort zones and make all of our voices heard.
